The Stubborn Tenacity of Life

…from our annual trip to the Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve, Marblehead, Ohio

It was many years ago, along the shore of Lake Erie only a mile or so northwest of this place, that I first became aware of how life persists, taking root on sparse landscapes and in the tiniest cracks and pockets of soil on solid rock. The Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve resides on old limestone quarry land with active quarrying still occurring across the road from it. Only a thin layer of soil exists on the limestone bedrock and yet the Lakeside Daisies thrive here along with a few small cedar trees. See also an earlier post: here
